Best spirit mixers

Alex Darus | Mashed | September 6, 2022
When the craving for a boozy beverage hits after a long day, you may not always have the liquor, mixers, and other ingredients you need to make your cocktail of choice at a moment's notice. Soda water and Coca-Cola are staple mixers for various spirits, but they can get old and boring after awhile. Sure, there are plenty of spirits and other miscellaneous mixers around the house to work with, your brain just hasn't figured out the best pairing yet. Thankfully, it just takes a little creativity and a lot of trial and error to figure out what can work. But at the moment, you might find yourself staring at your home bar while drawing a massive blank....more
Best vodka brands

Tim McKirdy | VinePair | June 23, 2022
Vodka is a paradoxical spirit. It leads spirit sales in America in terms of volume, and has done so for the last 40 years. Yet it holds none of the cultural cachet of whiskey or tequila. Browse liquor store shelves and you’ll discover more flavored iterations than all other spirits categories combined. But when it comes to judging quality, we instead base our opinions of a bottle on its lack of flavor....more

Best American whiskeys of 2021

Fred Minnick | December 30, 2021
This year was also the start of my spirits competition — The American Spirits Council of Tasters — and I wanted my rankings to be different than the ASCOT Awards. I also feel a ranking system is more accurate for a single critic to choose a whiskey of the year. Panels are better for determining Best in Class. For example, when scoring is used, I’ve been in panels that had two 96s. Does it end in a tie? No. A vote is taken and preferential tastes decide. This list represents what I like, and I am a single person, so there will be no votes....more

Nicolas Stecher | Maxim | December 30, 2021
Over the past week we’ve shined a light on several of our favorite categories within the world of American whiskey: rye, American single malts; double-barrel finishes; and innovation. Looking for something special to bring to that New Year’s Eve or holiday dinner party… or for your own top shelf stash?...more

Finding cool groomsmen gifts is harder than it should be. It requires some actual thought. These guys have been in your life forever—or deserve to be after supporting you through that rollercoaster law school semester. They’re too good for some knee-jerk, ink-filled token of appreciation (with or without initials). This is a huge event you’re sharing—and they’re with you all the way. It’s time to wow them with something that lets them know, beyond a doubt, they’re all tied for second-most-important person in your life right now. Here are 30 cool groomsmen gifts that’ll do just that...more
bartender vodkas

Christopher Osburn | Uproxx | September 3, 2021
Vodka gets a bad rap. The clear distillate is often thought of as a neutral spirit, where all the flavor has been stripped out. But our own blind taste tests of vodkas proved that’s unequivocally not the case. While vodka should have a clean taste, it’s still made from fermented grains, potatoes, or even fruit that’s distilled into alcohol — just like every other spirit on the shelf...more

If you’re anything like us, you’re constantly in search of new bourbons to add to your bar cart. With the weather growing cooler in the weeks to come, you’re sure to be hunting for even more warming drams to sip on. Sure, you can go the easy route and grab a bottle of one of the more well-known names — Beam, Turkey, Makers… classics, all — or you can take the road less traveled and grab a bottle (or three) of bourbon whiskey that deserves a little more attention than it gets...more

distilling distinction

Written and Photographed by P.M. Fadden | Artisan Spirit | Fall 2020
This story begins, as the best usually do, with good company kicked-back over a refreshing beverage. Lea and Bill Beckett, love birds with the good taste to adore the Tetons while sampling fine spirit, were looking out across one of the West's most striking geographies when they wondered how best to develop a parcel of that beautiful, potato-rich land. There were sipping vodka at the time. Don't potatoes make good vodka? Sometimes that's all it takes...more
great escapes

Winston Ross | Barron's Penta | November 8, 2019
Since the turn of the century, tourism in Yellowstone National Park has skyrocketed, topping 4 million people in 2015, to an all-time high of 4.2 million visitors the year afterward. That means sprawling lines of cars at every entrance, at least in the summer months, and it means every time someone spots a moose, antelope, bison, or herd of elk, there’s a traffic jam on the park’s mostly two-lane roads...more
